Description

David Bowie 1974 Pittsburgh, PA Concert Poster. David Bowie was heralded for his shape-shifting, chameleon-like ways throughout his career. This poster is from one of his most pivotal, going from the glam rock/glitter scene that made him a star, and into much more with funk and R&B feels thrown in.

Led by the hit single "Rebel Rebel," the man born David Robert Jones was moving forward from his Ziggy Stardust period/persona. (This poster, shows a black and white shot of Bowie in a Ziggy-era look.)

Playing the Pittsburgh venue (which could hold up to 3,700 people) that was open from the 1910s until its demolition in 1991, Bowie played on the same stage that Charlie Parker, Pink Floyd, and Louis Armstrong had previously graced. The Syria Mosque was also used for political rallies/events for Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Richard Nixon. This venue was for two nights in late June for Bowie, which his sets were devoted mostly to songs from Diamond Dogs and Aladdin Sane.

Diamond Dogs was Bowie's eighth album, released a month before these shows, culling material he wrote for a few projects that did not come together. Namely, theatrical productions of the George Orwell dystopian classic 1984, as well as The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. "Rebel Rebel" would become one of the best-known tunes from Bowie, cracking the charts all over the world.

This album would lead to more experimentation, renowned albums, and worldwide acclaim throughout the rest of the 1970s. This poster is from a time when Bowie showed he was much more than a glitter rock performer.
