Woody Guthrie 1963 Newport Folk Festival Souvenir Fans (2). A pair of souvenir fans, to keep oneself cool, from the all-important 1963 Newport Folk Festival held in Newport, Rhode Island over the weekend of July 26-28. This key gathering of musicians featured a very young but fast-rising Bob Dylan in several performances. One biography observed that Dylan "arrived at Newport '63 an underground sensation and left the weekend a national star."

Other talents performing this weekend included Joan Baez, Peter Paul & Mary, Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, John Lee Hooker, Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Dave Van Ronk, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Ian & Sylvia, John Hammond Jr., Ramblin' Jack Elliott, the New Lost City Ramblers, Mississippi John Hurt, Maybelle Carter and Tom Paxton, among many others.

This fan really celebrated the legacy of Woody Guthrie. The front side has the main lyric from his famous "This Land Is Your Land" in a ribbon across the top; and the fan's backside has the whole song written out.

The fan part is made of cardstock, printed in purple and brown on a leafy green background, and the handle was made of the same wooden material as an old-fashioned popsicle stick or tongue depressor.

These two fans, a first-ever Heritage offering, measure 7 1/4" x 13 1/4" each and grade to unused Near Mint condition. From the Archives of Charlie Rothschild. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Charlie Rothschild is a music manager with a career that spanned decades. He went on to work for renowned manager Albert Grossman (Dylan, Peter, Paul & Mary, Janis Joplin). As a manager, touring manager and concert promoter himself, Charlie worked alongside folk and rock 'n' roll greats Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground, Gordon Lightfoot, Judy Collins, Peter, Paul & Mary, Allen Ginsberg, Ian & Sylvia, The Clancy Brothers, Odetta, The Fugs and Pearls Before Swine, among others. Charlie also ran the storied 1960's New York City music venue Balloon Farm, before going out on his own in 1972.
