Description

The Byrds 1966 Newark, NJ Concert Poster w/"Turn! Turn! Turn!" Album as Graphics. Unusual vintage window card advertising Roger McGuinn, David Crosby and company in concert at Symphony Hall in Newark, NJ on Sunday, March 27, 1966. This was an unusual matinee show held at 1:30 PM.

The poster's strikingly colorful appearance owes to a technique that surprisingly wasn't used more often back then: utilizing a group's latest LP cover to serve as a concert poster's main visual. The Columbia Records paper "slick" of the Byrds' most recent album, Turn! Turn! Turn!, was the perfect graphic to use, with deep, rich colors that couldn't have been replicated by printing a picture on the original plain-white board.

The deep blue hues of the album cover are offset nicely by the red & black of all the lettering surrounding it. It's a highly unusual design idea that one almost never sees.

Notice the night's presenter was Charles R. Rothschild, from whose archives this specimen was found and consigned.

Measures 14" x 22" and grades to Very Good Minus condition for grime & blemishing to the white surface, creasing, scuffing, indents on the album-cover slick, and an upper right corner that's torn away. We should point out that the glossy album-cover slick is held in place by six staples. From the Archives of Charlie Rothschild. COA from Heritage Auctions.

As a manager, touring manager and concert promoter himself, Charlie worked alongside folk and rock 'n' roll greats Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground, Gordon Lightfoot, Judy Collins, Peter, Paul & Mary, Allen Ginsberg, Ian & Sylvia, The Clancy Brothers, Odetta, The Fugs and Pearls Before Swine, among others. Charlie also ran the storied 1960's New York City music venue Balloon Farm, before going out on his own in 1972.
