Description
Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (Zaloom Mayfield, 1991), Eleanor Coppola's Apocalypse Now Production Diary Entitled "Notes" and Related Ephemera. While Francis Ford Coppola embarked on the famously harrowing production of Apocalypse Now-transposing Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness onto the chaos of the Vietnam War-his wife, Eleanor Coppola, was alongside him with their three children, documenting the experience in real time. As the production spiraled into artistic and personal turmoil, Eleanor captured 16mm behind-the-scenes footage and recorded raw, contemporaneous notes chronicling both the creative process and the emotional toll it took on those involved. In 1991, longtime Coppola collaborator Fred Roos produced Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse, the acclaimed documentary built on Eleanor's footage and writings. Co-directed by Fax Bahr and George Hickenlooper, the film used diary readings, production images, and on-set material to create what many consider one of the greatest documentaries about filmmaking. It earned the National Board of Review's award for Best Documentary and remains a powerful portrait of ambition, obsession, and artistic survival. Offered here is an extraordinary group of materials directly tied to both Apocalypse Now and the making of Hearts of Darkness, including (1) studio-bound and bradded copy of Eleanor Coppola's original production diary manuscript, titled Notes, measuring 9" x 11.5" x 2", consisting of hundreds of pages of on-set entries and observations. The spine bears the handwritten inscription "Ellie C." in ink, (2) copies of the published version of Notes released by Simon & Schuster, (1) sealed laserdisc copy of Hearts of Darkness, and (1) National Board of Review award plaque for Best Documentary, with a brass-colored faceplate on a beveled wooden base, engraved with "Hearts of Darkness," "1991," and "Fred Roos" at the bottom and measuring 10" x 8.5" x 1". This lot reflects Fred Roos' deep and ongoing involvement with the Coppola family. As producer of both Apocalypse Now and Hearts of Darkness, Roos played a vital role in shaping not only the original film but also its definitive behind-the-scenes chronicle. Items exhibit expected signs of age and use. Paper materials show minor wear, creasing, and bumped corners. The award plaque exhibits light surface scratching on the metal faceplate. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the Estate of Fred Roos.Heritage Auctions provides detailed information when available but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
