Description
The Sheik (Paramount, 1921), Portrait of Rudolph Valentino "Sheik Ahmed Ben Hassan" by Bob Peak. Original portrait art of Sheik Ahmed Ben Hassan (Rudolph Valentino) by master illustrator and designer Bob Peak, lovingly executed in his distinct style with gouache and pastel on 25.5" x 39" artist's board. For this portrait, Peak employs pale blues, yellows, browns, whites, and pinks with his characteristic flare, capturing the mystical and otherworldly spirit of the character on a sparse black background. Since Peak was born 6 years after the release of this silent romantic drama that helped propel Valentino to movie stardom, it's possible The Sheik was simply one of Peak's favorite films and thus this artwork was made in homage. Alternatively, this portrayal of Valentino bears a striking resemblance to actor Marlon Brando, whom Peak portrayed several times in his designs for 1979's Apocalypse Now, perhaps indicating another inspiration behind this work. Particularly the shadowed right side of Valentino's façade bears striking resemblance to how Brando's face was shadowed in his scenes as Captain Kurtz in the finale of the great anti-war film. Exhibits some signs of handling and age, including corner bumps and mild edgewear to board. Signed by the artist on the recto.
