Spartacus (Universal, 1960), Jean Simmons "Varinia" Costume Sketch by Bill Thomas. Vintage original costume sketch accomplished in gouache and charcoal on artist's board, measuring 13" x 19.5". The sketch depicts Varinia (Jean Simmons) in a white draped gown with a gold-belted waist, gold-adorned necklace and headpiece, and sandals. Signed by costume designer Bill Thomas in black across the bottom right of the figure, with "Jean Simmons in 'Spartacus'" handwritten in pencil in the top right corner. The verso includes "34-E" in red ink and an "Academy Award" handwritten collector's note in pencil. The gown is worn by Varinia near the end of the film after she is captured by Crassus (Laurence Olivier). Bill Thomas shared with Valles the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, Color, for this film. Exhibits production wear and age, including overall toning and handling wear. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
