Description

Zelda Fitzgerald Rare Handwritten Signed Christmas Card, Birth Announcement, and Vintage Photograph (1921). Vintage original group of (5) items, including (1) double-layered birth announcement card for "Scotty Fitzgerald," dated October 26, 1921, with the parents' names "Mr. and Mrs. F. Scott Fitzgerald" printed on the lower card and tied together with the top card, (1) accompanying envelope addressed to Miss Mary Ciel West in Montgomery, Alabama, postmarked November 2, 1921, (1) Christmas and New Year's card featuring an illustration of a child in a yellow turban and Middle Eastern attire carrying steaming food, inscribed on the verso in faded brown ink, "Why don't you ever write me? Suppose your Xmas is very gay-hope so anyway- Love Zelda," and (1) accompanying envelope addressed to Miss Mary Ceil West, postmarked December 23, 1921. Also included is (1) vintage stereoscopic panoramic gelatin silver photograph in bifold cloth, with hand-drawn question marks in ink, and metal grommets for the viewer, of Zelda Fitzgerald with her (presumed) sisters, Marjorie Sayre, Rosalind Sayre, and Clotilde Sayre. Items range in size from 3.5" x 2.5" to 3" x 9.5". Often called the original "flapper," Zelda Fitzgerald was also a novelist, painter, and socialite, and the celebrated wife of author F. Scott Fitzgerald. Admired for her beauty, bold personality, and unconventional spirit, she epitomized the 1920s Jazz Age. She was tentatively diagnosed with schizophrenia and spent periods in and out of mental institutions until 1948, when her life was tragically cut short in a fire at the sanatorium where she was staying. Due to this, surviving memorabilia and autographs are exceedingly rare. This collection offers a glimpse into her personal life, including the birth announcement of her only child, Frances Scott "Scottie" Fitzgerald, who was often mistaken for a boy due to being named after her father. Items exhibit general wear and age, including edge wear, overall toning, and staining. The photograph has an emulsion crack in the top right corner and general soiling.
