Gladys Knight & Pips, David Ruffin, Chuck Jackson 1968 Chicago, IL Jumbo Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising a "Show of Super Stars" at the esteemed Regal Theater in Chicago, Illinois for one full week beginning Friday, September 20, 1968. In the order the poster lists them, featured were Gladys Knight & the Pips, Chuck Jackson, the Intruders, Yvonne Fair, Carl Wright and "Extra Added Attraction - David Ruffin, Former Leader of the Temptations." This was just three months after Ruffin had been fired from the Temps for a number of reasons. Measures 22" x 28" and grades to Near Mint condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famers Gladys Knight & the Pips were headlining on the strength of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," which had been #1 R&B for six weeks the previous fall (and a #2 mainstream pop hit as well). Two more Top 10 R&B hits had followed leading up to this engagement, "The End of Our Road" and "It Should Have Been Me." But the 60's would pale compared to how much Gladys and the Pips tore up the 1970's and beyond.

Chuck Jackson is a member of the R&B Music Hall of Fame, and best remembered for his 1962 hit "Any Day Now," covered by Elvis Presley and a host of others. The third-billed Intruders were very much basking in the glow of their national Top 10 pop hit "Cowboys to Girls" from earlier in the year, the only crossover hit they ever enjoyed.

And then there's David Ruffin, who had been the Temps' lead singer on "My Girl," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "(I Know) I'm Losing You" and "I Wish It Would Rain." It's pretty safe to say that Ruff let success go to his head; he wanted the same breakout billing that Smokey Robinson and Diana Ross were now getting, asking Motown chief Berry Gordy for "David Ruffin & The Temptations." But it couldn't even be considered given all the Temps' vocalists and Ruffin's cocaine addiction and erratic behavior, so he was eventually shown the door.

Condition details: Poster has a small crease through the "C" in "Cool" and touching the first "O" in the upper left corner, breaking no color. The other three corner tips are a tiny bit touched and bumped. Also, a printer's anomaly left the blue in Chuck Jackson's name a little bit lighter than the rest of the poster's blue.
