Description

James Brown 1967 Oakland, CA "I Got You" Jumbo Globe Concert Poster. An original cardboard advertising window card for James Brown and several support acts, including Bobby Byrd, performing at the Oakland Auditorium on Sunday, February 12, 1967. This is a highly attractive board that many consider to be the last of the singer's great 1960's concert posters. In addition to the dynamic action shot of James' face, the biggest pop hit of his career is listed right under his last name... "I Got You (I Feel Good)," which went to #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 about a year before this show. Poster measures a shade over 22 x 28" and grades to Near Mint MInus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: This remains the only specimen of this poster that Heritage has ever seen. This exact poster was sold by us back in July 2021, and that buyer has decided to consign much of his collection to Heritage here in spring 2024.

Elaborating some more, some collectors consider this 'tour blank' to be the last of the great James Brown concert posters of the 1960's. Throughout the decade he had been using mostly jumbo window cards like this, with a different design every year. The new design that followed this gem was smaller in size and showed the Godfather of Soul in a bow tie, almost like a waiter, with very few details, no song titles and usually no other acts (including his own) listed. It was a new design for a new era, and suited the times just fine, but this mid-60's classic has all the bells & whistles that vintage poster collectors love the most.

Including rarity. While this has been seen from four or five different cities, there generally aren't more than one known from any stop on the tour. Who knows how many they ran for each city... maybe 50 to 100? And back then, everything was usually thrown away right after the show.

We haven't mentioned the coloring yet... how good does that purple & yellow look, working together? Throw in the white board and black lettering, and the blue ink up in the venue box, and you have five colors in all. Enough to distract your attention momentarily from the "Go-Go Dancing Girls" plugged in the lower left. The swinging sixties!

Condition details: Poster has a dinged upper left corner which produced a half-inch crease and a little paper peeled back from the tip, but still there and no board lost at all. There are also ‘bug chews' at the top edge above "OAK," resulting in a spot of surface-paper loss between the second & third letters. The two bottom corners have tiny corner-tip dings as well. Otherwise in solid condition with just general toning throughout.
