Description

John Lennon w/Eric Clapton, The Doors 1969 "Toronto Rock & Roll Revival" Poster. An original thin-paper advertising poster for this special rock 'n' roll event held on September 13, 1969 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This very catchy poster depicts a typical "hippie chick" of the era playing a large tambourine, bookended by symmetrical images of an old-timey musician playing two instruments at once. All of the scheduled bands are listed right above her. Lennon, however, was a last-minute addition so not listed on the poster.

This was a huge, one-day, 12-hour concert that was immortalized on record in the form of John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band's Live Peace in Toronto 1969 album. That LP was released on Apple Records three months after the event and reached the Top 10 of Billboard's album chart in early 1970. Measures 18 1/2" x 25" and grades to repaired Fair condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Lennon, with Eric Clapton on guitar, Klaus Voorman on bass and Yoko Ono in tow, made the spontaneous decision to play after the posters and handbills were printed. The Doors were considered the headliners, and indeed closed the show late in the evening. Other acts appearing included Chicago Transit Authority, Alice Cooper, Junior Walker and the All-Stars, Tony Joe White and Cat Mother and the All-Night Newsboys, plus a strong contingent of rock & roll founding fathers in Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Bo Diddley and Gene Vincent. The latter five's participation was said to be a big factor in Lennon spontaneously agreeing to appear at the festival.

The poster's designer made an interesting choice of listing the Doors last, using the band's familiar name-logo, although it was run in larger size than all the other performers.

Condition details: Poster has been heavily repaired but mostly small stuff. The two lower corners were quite torn but have been surgically reattached. There's white tape-lifting under the ticket info at the bottom center edge. The top center of the poster has a 2" vertical tear which has been repaired. The back is a glossy, waxy feel that may not quite be the original paper, and many areas of aberration and discoloration. It's a bit of a hot mess but still presents well. Heritage usually does not carry a poster in this condition, but we felt it was an opportunity to offer collectors a 1960's John Lennon, Doors and Eric Clapton concert poster at a reduced rate due to the condition. This poster easily sells for $2,000-$3,000 when it's in excellent shape. And it's still good enough to frame, as the majority of damage is around the edges and verso.
