Description

Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper 1972 So-Cal Concert Poster by Rick Griffin Graded 9.8 (AOR-4.124). An original red & black concert poster for two future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legends on the same bill together 51 years ago on the campus of Cal State Fullerton, located in Orange County directly south of Los Angeles. This show on this date never actually happened... San Francisco Big Five poster artist Rick Griffin was showing off his skills for his new poster distribution company, California Graphics in 1972, and he took a bit of liberty with the date of this show which actually took place March 15, 1969! Sort of like he did with his well-loved Who at the Hollywood Palladium poster, found two lots before this.

But let's not lose sight of the grade... this poster has been graded a mother-loving 9.8 Near Mint/Mint condition by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).

Headliner Frank Zappa's name - it's interesting how the poster makes no mention of his Mothers of Invention - carries almost the top half of the poster, followed by a cute eyeball cartoon done by Griff. Shock-rocker Alice Cooper is the undercard - what a bill!

Griffin attached his name in the lower right corner of his poster, in his old-school, simple "signature" of the day (really just his name printed, with a couple of lines). This is the first time in seven years Heritage has been able to offer this poster, and the very first graded one we've ever auctioned. Measures 14" x 20" and grades to 9.8 Near Mint/Mint. (Special thanks to Ted Bahr of the Bahr Gallery for setting us straight on this one.) COA from Heritage Auctions.
