Description

The Beach Boys 1964 Reno, Nevada "Summer Safari" Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising the Beach Boys appearing at the State Building Auditorium in Reno, Nevada for two evening shows on Thursday, July 30, 1964. This was the "Fun Fun Fun"- "I Get Around" Beach Boys, since those were their last two singles at this point (and both Top 5 hits). Features a great, sharp photo of the group in suits and skinny ties, as opposed to their usual blue-and-white-striped surf-band shirts. The Kingsmen were the extra added attraction, having just enjoyed their own consecutive Top 20 hits with "Louie, Louie" and "Money." Measures 14" x 22" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: This poster was printed by the seldom-seen Majestic Poster Press in Los Angeles. Most vintage telephone-pole posters you see from this era in Southern California were printed by the Colby poster-printing company. And we have to say that this is the first concert poster we've ever seen that plugged the ticket-buying location at both the top and the bottom of the poster. Now that's really making sure people knew!

This remains the only specimen of this poster that Heritage has ever seen. This exact poster was sold by us back in November 2021, and that buyer has decided to consign much of his collection to Heritage here in 2024.

Condition details: The four corners are a little bit soft, rounded and nudged; the lower left one got creased, but doesn't touch yellow. There are 3-4 tape lifts in the upper white margin which are very clean and hard to spot; one of them barely touches the yellow above the "O" in "Record." There's a light surface gouge which begins in the "A" in "Beach" and heads south but gets lighter as it goes, and by "Starring" is just a mark and by the time it gets to Carl Wilson's face (far right Beach Boy) it's just an infinitesimally small line. Most of these things are detectable only by tilting the poster at an angle to the light. Surface crease in the yellow between "Summer" and "Safari" and under "Hodges," but doesn't stray into any black. And finally, the lightest, lightest bit of hard-to-detect water staining on the bottom white margin, culminating under the printer's credit and clearly visible only under the word "Poster."
