THE EXACT COPY PHOTOGRAPHED FOR "THE ART OF ROCK"

The Who 1969 Hollywood Palladium Poster Signed by Rick Griffin, Graded 9.2 (AOR-3.65). A hugely popular Rick Griffin concert poster for The Who, Poco and the Bonzo Dog Band appearing at Los Angeles' Hollywood Palladium on Friday night, June 13, 1969. This specimen has been signed by the masterful Rick Griffin in bold black pen, was photographed for use in the Art of Rock book where it received a full page, and then was graded a strong 9.2 Near Mint Minus by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). It even states in the CGC grading strip, "'Art of Rock' copy." So this piece obviously has a couple of very special features going for it.

This show dates to the very week the Who's landmark Tommy album entered Billboard magazine's album chart, where it would remain for over two years and become a staple of FM rock radio. The band played the entire 17-track album live for the first time on the West Coast at this concert. The show also fell right between two Top 40 hits from that album, "Pinball Wizard" and "I'm Free." It was such an event that Janis Joplin, David Crosby, Peter Tork, Cass Elliott and members of the Turtles and Spirit were in the audience. Measures 16" x 22 5/8". COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.274 (full-page illus.).

More Information: Serious collectors know that only the B&W handbill with this art was printed before the concert and used for advertising. Rick was reportedly disappointed that his cool art had gone so under-used, so a year or two later he had this colorful poster-sized version printed up.
