Description

Velvet Underground 1969 Vulcan Gas Co. Austin, TX Concert Handbill Graded 9.8. An original purple & orange concert flyer advertising Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground performing at the Vulcan Gas Company in Austin, Texas on Thursday thru Saturday evenings, October 23-25, 1969. Noted artist Jim Franklin created fascinating artwork depicting a velvet-lined coffin six feet underground, complete with memorial wreaths aboveground. New York's Velvets were touring off their latest long-player, The Velvet Underground, featuring "Pale Blue Eyes" and "Beginning to See the Light."

Vulcan Gas concert ephemera is much harder to find & collect than its San Francisco counterparts, because items were printed in such small numbers. This handbill measures 8 1/2" x 10 3/4" and was graded a velvety smooth 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: King, Eric, The Collector's Guide to Psychedelic Rock Concert Posters, Postcards and Handbills 1965-1973, Vol. 12, Berkeley, CA, 2022, p.892 (illus.).

More Information: This was actually a two-sided flyer with the verso containing an ad informing pundits that a local head shop, Oat Willie's, had moved location. The graphics there are no slouch either, and in fact much more psychedelic than the VU side; credit artist Pat Brown in this case.

Also on the bill with the Velvets were Ramon, Ramon and the four Daddyos plus Crowbar (Thursday & Saturday), and the Water Brothers (Friday).
