SKELETON & ROSES OF A DIFFERENT COLOR, THANKS TO MOUSE

FD-26 "Skeleton & Roses" Stanley Mouse Hand-Colored & Double-Signed 2nd-Printing Concert Poster. A remarkable piece of watercolor art from Stanley Mouse using the Grateful Dead's iconic FD-26 "Skeleton & Roses" concert poster. This display presents a second printing of the poster, printed in the fall of 1966 not long after the shows, which was taken off the press before the colors were dropped in. This B&W version was then hand-colored in by Mouse decades later using red, two shades of blue, and - surprise - a number of lavender roses as well. Mouse signed it (in running-mouse fashion) at the bottom adding "12-2002," for December 2002 when he executed this. And somewhere along the line - we'd assume at the same time - Alton Kelley added his signature as well. It all adds up to a stunning, unique display piece for the hobby's most popular concert poster.

Mouse's watercolor brush marks give great character to this piece, a totally different animal than regular red & blue colors off a printing press. Especially with the added lavender roses, it has a pastel feel that gives it a completely new life over the poster. It's fun to spot the slight differences in what Mouse chose to color this time around.

We've obviously chosen to leave this in its box frame, which has unbreakable, protective UV-Plexiglas. This lot also includes a Mouse-generated Certificate of Authenticity, signed & dated to 2002. The overall frame measures 19" wide x 25" tall x 2" deep and remains in pristine condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: The poster itself has a one-inch diagonal crease in the upper right corner, all in the white, very typical. It's very light and a complete non-factor.
