Metallica (Cliff Burton's First Show) 1983 San Francisco, CA Concert Poster. A momentous gig in the history of Metallica is previewed here on this yellow and black concert poster. This show at the Stone (with Laaz Rockit and Exodus) was bassist Cliff Burton's first show with Metallica (and coincidentally, future Metallica lead guitarist Kirk Hammett's last show with Exodus) on March 5, 1983. Burton said he would join Metallica only if they moved from the Los Angeles glam rock scene to the San Francisco pre-thrash scene. Burton's intelligence and well-rounded music language had a major influence on Metallica, inspiring the band to grow beyond their skate-rock/New Wave of British Heavy Metal-inspired sound.

At this show was the debut of an original composition by Burton called "(Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth." Unafraid to use a Wah-Wah pedal and playing high up on his bass' neck, the classical-inspired melody had been written by Burton years before joining Metallica (and even his previous band, Trauma). It was proof this guy (who took inspiration from the Misfits to Lynyrd Skynyrd to R.E.M.) was special in the emerging Bay Area thrash scene. And Metallica carried his influence for the rest of their career, long after his untimely passing in 1986.
