Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin 1969 Northern California Folk-Rock Festival Poster. An original first-printing concert poster advertising the weekend-long Northern California Folk-Rock Festival in the San Francisco Bay Area on Friday thru Sunday, May 23-25, 1969. The Jimi Hendrix Experience is the first-listed and top-billed act; the young up-and-coming Led Zeppelin is listed on the second line, but did not appear at the festival... they played gigs in Illinois and Maryland instead. Printed on glossy card stock, this window card measures 14" x 20 ½" and grades to Near Mint condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Besides Jimi and Zep, the other musicians listed are Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix bassist Noel Redding (for some reason not billed as Fat Mattress), Muddy Waters, Santana (three months before their first album), Eric Burdon (but did not appear), Spirit, the Chambers Brothers, Canned Heat, the Youngbloods, Steve Miller, Buffy St. Marie, Taj Mahal, Lee Michaels, Blues Image, Aum, Elvin Bishop, Poco (with their original name Pogo also given), People, Chuck Berry (misspelled on the handbill but correct here), the Loading Zone, Sweet Linda Divine (misspelled on the handbill but correct here), Linn County (misspelled here and on the handbill), Cat Mother (shortened by leaving off "and the All-Night Newsboys"), Doc Watson and the New Lost City Ramblers.

This is not the common reprint, as indicated by the word "Tickets" in the lower left corner. On originals like this, it is much shorter than the words "City Ramblers" above it. On the reprints, "Tickets" is much longer and ends almost underneath the "S" of "Ramblers." The bootleg reprints are also on much thinner paper.

Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant once concocted a story about this festival's promoter Bob Blodgett paying to fly Zep back & forth across the country in a Lear jet to squeeze in this show, but that was a pure fabrication.

There is not a lot known, or reported, about this festival, especially since it was not professionally filmed or recorded. So it remains one of the "hidden" big rock festivals of the magical festival year of 1969, but there's no denying the stellar talent line-up that did play over the three days, several of whom went on to play at Woodstock three months later. The artwork was created by Linda Segul, whose name is in the lower right corner.
