TURNED INTO AN ALBUM COVER... THE ULTIMATE COMPLIMENT

Grateful Dead 1969 Famous "Aoxomoxoa" Avalon Ballroom Concert Poster Graded 9.2 (AOR 2.24). An original pre-concert first printing of the Grateful Dead's legendary Aoxomoxoa concert poster, advertising a weekend of shows at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom in late January 1969, promoted by Soundproof Productions instead of the now-defunct Family Dog. Created by the legendary Rick Griffin, this is truly among the most legendary of psychedelic concert posters from the 1960's, surely one of the 10 most popular posters from that decade and very possibly in most people's top 5. How many concert posters were so great that they were turned into album covers, like this one was?

The esteemed book The Art of Rock gave this poster the biggest full-page image it possibly could, leaving everything else off the page, including its plate number, the only poster in the entire book to receive such royal treatment. Wow. Measuring 21 3/4" x 26 1/4", this specimen has been graded to a very pleasing 9.2 Near Mint Minus by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). From the Tim Backstrom Grateful Dead Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
