A HUMAN BE-IN POSTER THAT YOU NEVER SEE

Grateful Dead, Timothy Leary 1967 Denver, CO Human Be-In Concert Poster. An original bright Day-Glo concert/event poster for a Summer of Love Human Be-In at City Park in Denver, Colorado on Sunday, September 24, 1967. This poster is a true rarity... we're constantly seeing the San Francisco Human Be-In posters, but never this one from the mile-high city. It's a brilliant pastiche of Day-Glo orange, pink and red, kept simple by poster artist Michael McClard, who's also signed it down at the bottom.

And yes, Jerry Garcia & Co. definitely appeared at this affair, after playing two nights to initiate the Denver Family Dog venue (FD-82 "The Head" poster). This was the original core five Dead founders just moments before Mickey Hart joined as second drummer. Timothy Leary was the other big name in attendance at this free concert/happening, especially since LSD was still legal in Colorado at this time. The Denver Post reported that about 5,000 people had gathered; "some came to dance, some came to sing, some came to love, some came to watch, and a few came to just be there," the paper wrote.

Other acts appearing on this Sunday afternoon were Captain Beefheart, Mother Earth, Tracy Nelson, Lothar and the Hand People and Crystal Palace Guard. A flyer for the event promised "beads, bells, incense, flowers, food and other trippy things." (Special thanks to Westword.com.)

This first-ever Heritage offering measures 19" x 24 7/8" and grades to restored Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Chameleon Restoration addressed a few edge and corner issues, touching up any printing or color where necessary, mending pinholes, eradicating surface blemishes and greatly reducing any creasing it might have had. The result is a vibrantly beautiful piece with little or no evidence of past damage. The poster does have a few blemishing irregularities, for example the upper left corner where it's white in one place and then gets grimy. Also see above and below the "00" of "7:00" in the bottom right. The bright pink & orange have some inconsistencies as well, in the lower right quadrant, but we strongly feel this is normal for such a low-budget, teenage poster artist, hippie-driven undertaking almost 60 years ago.
