Description

Grateful Dead Spring 1966 Avalon Ballroom Straight Theater Concert Handbill (AOR-2.15). An original B&W paper advertising flyer for "A Reading and Dance Concert" presented by the Straight Theater at San Francisco's Avalon Ballroom on Thursday evening, May 19, 1966. The Grateful Dead take center stage on the handbill in an almost Yellow Submarine-like flying arrow, joined by The Wildflower, The Outfit and beat poet Michael McClure.

Features charming, childlike artwork by Linda Nimmer, reminiscent of poster artist Mari Tepper. This occasion also marks the very first time the Dead performed their cover of the Young Rascals' "Good Lovin'," the #3 single in the country this week. Printed on thin paper, this flyer measures 8 1/2" x 11" and grades to Near Mint condition. From the Tim Backstrom Grateful Dead Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.106 (illus.).

More Information: Handbill has only light toning to the borders,
