THE COMPLETE ORIGINS OF "SOMEBODY TO LOVE" AND "WHITE RABBIT"

FD-17 Jefferson Airplane, Great Society 1966 "Snake Lady" Avalon Ballroom Poster Graded 9.8. An original first-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Jefferson Airplane w/Signe Anderson and the Great Society w/Grace Slick performing at the Avalon Ballroom on Friday and Saturday nights, July 22 & 23, 1966. Known as FD-17 in the Family Dog numbered series, this poster was designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, and given the super- coveted grade of 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company), and there's never been a 9.9 or 10 graded on this poster.

Obviously, this was a powerful one-two punch of Bay-Area folk-rock-turned-acid-rock bands featuring popular leading ladies on many vocals. It's interesting how the top group had the two most memorable hits out of San Francisco in the 60's, and the bottom group wrote them both. Referring, of course, to "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit." Measures 14 x 20". COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: This poster was printed in both gold and silver on its first run, and this is the gold version; thus the "OP-1" designation, whereas silver is the OP-2. Mouse & Kelley's design was based around a photograph by Franz Stuck.

The Great Society had only three months to live at this point, before Grace Slick would jump from the bottom group to the top one in mid-October. This was also the Airplane's last-ever gig at the Avalon; promoter Bill Graham contractually tied them up after this exclusively for his shows at the Fillmore.
