Description
FD-10 Grateful Dead 1966 "Hayfever" Avalon Ballroom Concert Poster Graded 8.5. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Grateful Dead, the Leaves and the Grass Roots playing at the Avalon Ballroom on Friday and Saturday nights, May 27 & 28, 1966. Known as FD-10 in the Family Dog numbered series and nicknamed "Hayfever," this poster was designed by Wes Wilson and marked the debut of the Grateful Dead on any FD or BG concert poster, which explains their third-billed status. Measuring 14" x 20", it was graded to 8.5 Very Fine Plus by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). COA from Heritage Auctions.More Information: Bill Graham would get the Dead the following weekend as second on the bill to Quicksilver (BG-9), but Chet Helms would always be able to brag that he was the first to present Jerry Garcia & Co., even if just by a week.
This autumn-colored spring poster was the creation of Wilson, who was beginning to shift his allegiances full-time to designing posters for Graham. Perhaps that's why, for the first time, Wes included his phone number as part of his credit down below "Room."
Those of us who remember antihistamines in the 60's to combat allergies and hay fever surely get the theme of this poster; leaves and grass roots could be a potent cause of sneezing and watery eyes. Pity those poor punters who attended Friday night; the Dead played on Saturday only.
