Description
FD-61 The Doors 1967 Avalon Ballroom Concert Poster Signed by Victor Moscoso, Graded 9.8. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Doors and Sparrow (with John Kay of Steppenwolf) playing at the Avalon Ballroom on Friday and Saturday nights, May 12 & 13, 1967. Known as FD-61 in the Family Dog numbered series, this poster was designed by Victor Moscoso, is nicknamed "Butterfly Lady" and was signed by Moscoso down in the bottom margin. And then it was graded a break-on-through 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). There has never been a Moscoso-signed FD-61 graded higher by CGC. Measures 14" x 20". COA from Heritage Auctions.More Information: The Doors were just getting started in spring '67, with no "Light My Fire" single yet and their debut album having just eked into the top 100 of Billboard's album chart this week. They had just commenced recording their second album, Strange Days, about a week prior to these shows. In about two months' time they would have the #1 single in the country.
"The Sparrow" was the blues-rock outfit originally from Ontario, Canada that featured singer/songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player John Kay. They were originally called The Sparrows and then shortened it to just Sparrow; this poster compromises the two versions and calls them "The Sparrow." By this point the group had set down roots in California and were dividing their time between S.F. and L.A. Without delving too deeply into the individual musicians that comprised Sparrow and then Steppenwolf, suffice it to say that by the following year, John Kay and his bandmates would explode on the scene with "Born to Be Wild" and never look back.
