Description

Jefferson Airplane 1966 "Edwardian Ball" Fillmore Poster Signed by Mouse, Graded 9.8 (AOR-2.81). First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Jefferson Airplane playing at the Fillmore Auditorium on Sunday night, November 6, 1966, in an event known as the "Edwardian Ball." Designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, this poster was boldly signed in gold ink by Mouse and graded a very regal 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).

The Edwardian Ball is one of the most popular non-BG/FD concert posters in the psychedelic hobby; due to its dazzling appearance, the Art of Rock book gave it the respect of a full page. It was printed in very small numbers, too... one good source estimates 250... and only the originals have the Bindweed Press credit down in the lower right corner.

The last time Heritage sold this poster, a year ago from the KC Murphy Bindweed Press Collection, it realized $19,375 in a 9.6 grade. This specimen is even one notch better. Measures 14 1/4" x 20" graded 9.8 Near Mint/Mint. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.154 (illus.).

More Information: The party was thrown on a Bill Graham off-night, sponsored instead by the Associated Students of San Francisco State College. It had been only three weeks prior that Grace Slick joined the Airplane, replacing Signe Anderson. In fact, they had already recorded two songs for next year's Surrealistic Pillow album... "She Has Funny Cars" and "My Best Friend." Although the Airplane were still getting poised for commercial take-off, the quality of this poster befits a band already world-famous and is a strong candidate for the Airplane's best concert poster ever.
