Description
TWO FLYING EYEBALLS ARE BETTER THAN ONE
BG-105 Jimi Hendrix "Flying Eyeball" Second Printing Uncut Sheet
(AOR-2.51). An original uncut sheet containing two images of
the famous BG-105 concert poster, that of the Jimi Hendrix
Experience, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers and Albert King
performing at San Francisco's famed Fillmore Auditorium and
Winterland ballroom on the first four days of February 1968. This
is from the second, but still vintage, printing of the famous
poster, as tipped off by the "10" showing before "Tickets" down in
the lower left corner area of each poster.Notice the color blue is also missing from this print... normally found in the sphere behind the eyeball and in its center iris. Notice also there's no gold around the letters of Griffin's iconic lettering; it's white here instead. So this is a progressive proof of sorts. Our consignor likes to call this a "color variation," pointing out also that the eyeball's tentacles are dusky brown and light brown as opposed to dark green and light green.
No matter what you call it, it's a rare, if not unique, version of an incredibly iconic psychedelic rock poster of the 1960's, advertising about the biggest god of them all, Jimi Hendrix. This first-ever Heritage offering measures 29" x 23" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.146 (with black and gold colors only, no red) (illus.).
More Information: The posters' red color has experienced just a slight amount of fading from years of exposure to light. On the verso, at the top there are two light marks where framing tape once held a mat around this piece.
