A CRAZY-RARE DEAD POSTER YOU'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE

Grateful Dead, Chuck Berry 1968 Vancouver, B.C. "Soul Explosion" Concert Poster. An original Canadian concert poster for the Grateful Dead, Chuck Berry, the Loading Zone and "Little Dion" performing at the PNE Coliseum in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on Saturday evening, November 16, 1968. The local promoter called it a "Soul Explosion," which must have tickled the Dead's PigPen to no end.

This rarity was printed on very thick card stock, uses an unusual photo of the Dead falling down the stairs at 710 Ashbury St., and was printed using the "split-fountain" inking technique. So the color of everything morphs from turquoise to plum to dark blue as you make your way down the poster.

This show ended up getting canceled, but it was far enough along that tickets had been sold for it. After playing four nights at the Fillmore West on Nov. 7-10, the band embarked on a far-ranging tour, and this date was an early casualty. This first-ever Heritage offering measures 17" x 22" and grades to unrestored Very Good Plus condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: After doing a deep dive on the net and Google images, we could find no mention or known image of this poster. This is new for both the concert poster and Grateful Dead communities. How often and rare is the case that you can offer something that's never been seen before or known to exist until now?

This poster came out of a large and diverse collection of late 1950's-late 60's concert posters from a local Vancouver music figure.

Condition details: Poster has light uneven toning throughout. There is micro-tip bumping to all four corners, just very tiny. The verso betrays a slight edge bump in the upper right corner area, barely seen from the front. There's a small mark of tape residue in the lower right corner area. Verso also shows horizontal creases and rubbing. Oddly, the verso's upper left corner area shows a curving crease, but it's barely visible on the front... such is the heartiness of the thick cardstock this poster is made from.
