Description

DELIGHTFULLY COLORFUL POSTER FROM CALIFORNIA'S STATE CAPITOL

The Doors 1968 Sacramento, CA Vivid-Colors Concert Poster (AOR-3.21). An original paper ticket-advertising concert poster for the Doors playing at the venerable Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, California on Saturday night, June 15, 1968. Little-known poster artist Sam Sirdofsky created this gem which uses pinks, purples and oranges to great effect. A wonderland of sorts is depicted with a lion getting along with a lamb and two goddess-like figures on either side.

The poster artist also seemed to be in step with the Doors' philosophical ethos, or was just a big follower of the group. In the arches above the ladies' heads, it reads on the left, "An opening to the eye of the mind is the door," and on the right side, "To the paths far beyond the kingdom anon."

Such a scarce poster that this is the very first time Heritage has ever been able to offer it. Measures 17 1/2" x 22 1/2" and grades to Very Good Minus condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.261 (illus.).

More Information: Poster has a 3/8" edge tear at the top center, which goes into the pink. There's also a smaller 1/8" tear on the upper left edge. Once upon a time, pressure on this poster while it was rolled up caused horizontal creases across the poster, visible to various degrees. They do break color down the left side of the artwork, such as in the lady's lavender gown. Due to small surface creasing, notice also there are three color-breaks in the black bar at the top. There are brown foxing spots in the lower left corner area.

We'd like to point out the printer's anomalies also found in the white areas of this poster, which are definitely not considered damage... most noticeably a 2 ¼" long one in the upper right corner area, and smaller hash marks there as well as in the upper left corner and lower right corner areas. The very tip of the lower left corner is not missing, it's just folded under.
