Description

Fletcher Henderson 1941 Old Orchard Beach, Maine Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising the highly prolific and important Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra playing at the Old Orchard Pier ballroom venue in Old Orchard Beach, Maine on Friday night, August 29, 1941. To quote Wikipedia, "Along with Duke Ellington, Henderson is considered one of the most influential arrangers and bandleaders in jazz history. His influence was vast."

Another thing that applies to these Old Orchard Beach boards: Items of this vintage are especially scarce because on the ones that did survive for a few years, America's paper drives during World War II ate up another big chunk of whatever still existed. Measures 13 7/8" x 21 7/8" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: We must confess that the year of this poster remains a bit uncertain. The poster's date of Friday, August 29 comes out to either 1930, 1941 or 1947. We sold this poster once, years ago, and labeled it 1930. That seems a bit early to us now; artistic renderings of the musicians, rather than photographs, were usually used in the early 30's. And post-WWII 1947 seems too late for this window card. So we picked the middle year, given that Henderson was still an on & off bandleader in the 1940's. If any jazz historians out there can help us with this, we'll gratefully update this description, right up until auction time.

Condition details: No touch-up or restoration needed at all on this one. The VG grade comes mostly from just grime and dirt on the white surfaces. Strongest examples are the upper left edge, and on "son" in "Henderson." Also on the black & orange "ST" of "Orchestra." There's a four-inch vertical surface crease in the white to the right of Henderson's photo which touches no color. Board's verso has typical stray black ink from the previous poster and a mark of silver paint.
