Description

Woody Herman 1939 Old Orchard Beach, Maine Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising "America's New Sensation," Woody Herman and his Orchestra, playing at the Old Orchard Pier ballroom venue in Old Orchard Beach, Maine on Saturday night, September 16, 1939. Features a terrific art-deco design full of blues and magentas. Others love the shadow-font lettering used for the date up above. What's terrific about the timing of this is that Woody's first Top 10 hit and most famous song, "At the Woodchopper's Ball," had just made its mark earlier this year. Measures 14" x 22" and grades to repaired Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Besides "Woodchopper's Ball," Woody had another Top 10 hit for Decca this year, "Blue Evening." His next charter was the Top 20 "Blues on Parade" in early 1940. Then in 1941 his biggest hit ever was #1 for a month, "Blues in the Night." And his ork was sometimes billed as "The Band That Plays the Blues." No wonder this poster has a lot of blue in it...

Condition details: Poster had damage to the two upper corners, which have been expertly repaired by Chameleon Restoration. The lower right corner had material missing in the white margin only, which has been restored. A little edge damage in the left white margin has likewise been touched up, along with a little area under "O'Keefe." The board has a bit of grime in the upper venue box, a small surface puncture wound which has been repaired to the right of "America's," and a surface crease which runs from Woody's forehead up into the "T" in "Sept." Otherwise just an occasional surface blemish and light general toning.
