Edward Hopper original pencil drawing of "Jean Valjean" from Victor Hugo's epic novel Les Misérables. (ca. 1900s) Vintage original pencil study drawing of "Jean Valjean" accomplished in graphite on 7.25 x 10.25 in. gray artists leaf visible through 11.25 x 15.5 in. mat. The iconic American realist painter Hopper worked on sketches for illustrations for an edition of Hugo's, Les Misérables ca. 1907. The drawing was originally owned by the French collector, Madame J. Gambart de Lignieres and later sold at auction in Los Angeles in 1938. Hopper has signed and dated the drawing "1907" adding, "Jean - Les Misérables" in the lower right corner. Exhibiting minor age. Unexamined out of 16 x 19.75 in. vintage wooden frame. Retains Madame J. Gambart de Lignieres' label and an Oct. 1938 Don Feldman auction house sticker on the verso. In vintage very good to fine condition.
