Description

The Ten Commandments (Paramount, 1923), Window Card. Vintage original 14" x 21" window card. Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments (1923) was a landmark silent film that helped set a new standard for epic filmmaking in Hollywood. Shot partly on location in California's Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes, the film featured massive sets for the Exodus scenes-including a full-scale Egyptian city-so large and elaborate that remnants were buried in the sand and rediscovered decades later by archaeologists and film historians. The famous parting of the Red Sea was achieved using a combination of practical effects and clever editing, including filming water flowing backward and then reversing the footage. DeMille's decision to split the film into two parts-one biblical, one contemporary-was unusual at the time and allowed him to deliver both spectacle and a moral lesson for modern audiences. It was one of the most expensive productions of the silent era and a major box office success, solidifying DeMille's reputation as a master showman and pioneer of cinematic scale. This window card, depicting Julia Faye as the Wife of Pharaoh, has never been offered by Heritage Auctions before. In addition to toning, corner separation, creasing, and edge nicks, this card appears to have been reduced by approximately 1". Fine condition. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
