Description
The Bunker Family Living Room from All in the Family (CBS TV, 1971-1979) and Archie Bunker's Place (CBS, 1979-1983). Heritage proudly presents the original walls and set decoration of one of the most famous houses in all of TV land, 704 Hauser Street, Queens, New York. The home of Archie & Edith Bunker and the-nine season run of All in the Family, plus the additional five seasons of its popular spinoff series, Archie Bunker's Place. This comprehensive lot comprises of the contents of the Bunker's fabled, careworn set, seen season after season, and in most cases, with no duplicate, rotation pieces used by production over the years-just these pieces on offer. From wallpaper-covered set walls, 1960s furniture and carpet, to quaint bric-a-brac and set dressing, the show's creator, Norman Lear, had the set furnished and decorated in muted colors and tones, intentionally keeping it devoid of colors. The overall drab look of the set was intentional, and it was meant to reinforce the working-class aesthetic of a lower-middle class family living in the Astoria section of Queens, New York. The lot includes: (1) a pumpkin-orange upholstered sofa with polished wooden legs and throw pillows, (2) a rectangular coffee table of dark wood, (3) a two-step set of stairs constructed of wood and metal with brown floral carpet runner, (4) large rolling stair unit with horizontal railing and brown carpet runner, that leads to the "upstairs" of the Bunker home, (5) the stairway backing window set wall covered in beige wallpaper adorned with a print of a house, (6) the stairway side set wall covered in a repeating print of small houses, (7) a vintage TV tray with yellow top, hand-painted in green, blue and lavender, (8) an oval metal trash can painted mustard yellow with printed gold pattern, (9) a prominent set wall framed print of snow-capped mountain, (10) a prominent framed print of an old bridge (on window wall), (11) a print of a boat on a stormy sea (on front of larger stair unit), (12) an antique-style metal wall sconce in the style of dripping candles, (13) a table lamp (on cabinetry unit), (14) ceramic blue parrot statue on a brown base (on cabinetry unit), (15) a turquoise blue ceramic vase (on cabinetry unit), (16) tall, square, dark wood table (at the corner of the cabinetry unit), (17) beige rotary dial telephone (on top of tall, square table), (18) a New York telephone book for the Bronx, 1977-1979 (on square table shelf), (19) stairs overhand with dark wooden trim that suggests the continuation of the stairs up to the second floor (beside cabinetry unit), (20) beige-brown floor covering with hand-painted faux wood slats, and designed to covey the look of an area rug but flat so that camera equipment could roll over it (under living room chairs and other furniture), (21) a closet set wall covered in careworn yellow wallpaper with a walnut closet door (in the entry), (22) tall cabinetry unit (sits perpendicular to the large stair unit), (23) rust and orange center set wall with wood paneling on the lower portion and wood-trimmed archway that leads to the alcove (backs the buffet), (24) a round back chair of dark wood (sits in foreground of larger stair unit), (25) and some set dressing pieces including a lamp with metal base, six of Edith's easy listening LPs, six books, and three magazines. The largest wall segments measure approximately 108 in. tall x 148 in. long x 11 in. wide. Norman Lear had as many as five top sitcoms on the air at the same time, so instead of renting different sound stages and lighting packages for every production, he had sets taken down after every taping, then erected the next production on the same stage. This resulted in the "set dec" being overly handled or dropped. Since such set dressing elements were primarily sourced from secondhand shops, they could not be replaced, and as such the single set of fragile pieces exhibit chips, cracks, and evidence of repair. Many of the pieces still retain written "positioning tape" with numbers underneath that would match a piece of grip tape on the set. An incredible, once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire an fictional physical space from perhaps the greatest television series in the history of television. Please note that Archie and Edith Bunker's signature living room chairs and side table are offered separately in the previous lot, Lot #89618.Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
