E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (Universal, 1982), Original Preliminary Pencil Poster Artwork by John Alvin. John Alvin's poster artwork for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is one of the most iconic images in film history, depicting the glowing touch between human and alien fingers against a backdrop of stars-a not-so-subtle homage to Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam. The image captures the film's central themes of connection, wonder, and the blending of the ordinary with the extraordinary. Alvin's use of light and composition evokes a sense of magic and emotional depth that became a hallmark of his style. The poster not only helped define the visual identity of E.T. but also contributed to the emotional resonance that made the film a cultural phenomenon. Offered here is one of John Alvin's first sketches for what would become the final poster, when he was still figuring out the positions of the hands and the moon in order to create a perfect balance.
