Description

Blue Movie (Unmade Script, 1970), Terry Southern's Personal Screenplay Outline, and Full Screenplay Draft. Vintage original archive of production materials related to Terry Southern's adaptation of his novel Blue Movie into a screenplay. The archive includes a small 8.5" x 5.5" play script containing a partial copy of Southern's 1970s novel, a 7-page outline with handwritten corrections, and production notes stamped "Sterling Ross Agency" in a manila folder labeled "Blue Note Movie Outline," including annotations written with various pens and pencils. Also included is a 254-page screenplay draft by Southern, three-hole punched, with a handwritten note on the final page addressed to "Lear" that reads: "Dear Lear / How about this for a funny idea..." and mentions a meeting with "Mike... Nichols" and producers "prepared to 'come up with some heavy scratch up front'" for "development money." Blue Movie follows Boris Adrian, a famous director attempting to make a pornographic film starring real Hollywood actors. Southern dedicated the novel to Stanley Kubrick, likely to attract his interest in adapting the project-a collaboration that never materialized. The screenplay outline and draft are photocopies, reproduced on standard 8.5" x 11" paper. All items exhibit expected wear, including fading, bent corners and edges, small tears around the hole-punched areas, and minor staining. The penciled handwriting on the final page has faded but remains legible. The outline also shows visible folds. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the Collection of Terry Southern.
