Description

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Columbia, 1964), Terry Southern Personal 16mm Print, Personal 16mm Victor Animatophone Projector, and 16mm Print of The Loved One (MGM, 1965). Vintage original group of Dr. Strangelove screening materials, including (1) Victor Animatophone Model 40 16mm projector (ca. 1942) with beige carrying case, sound drive, amplifier, and 2- detachable reel holders. Projector measures approx. 17" x 10" x 14". Also included are (3) 16mm film reels of Terry Southern's personal print of Dr. Strangelove, his Academy Award-nominated film, each measuring approx. 14" in diameter and housed in a canvas-covered box with one metal canister labeled "Doc Strange," measuring approx. 14" in diameter and 1" deep. Also included is (1) 16mm print of The Loved One (1965), Tony Richardson's satire about a British poet working at a Hollywood cemetery. The reel measures approx. 14" in diameter with a matching canister. The Loved One reel comes with three pages of printed editing/splicing notes prepared for the editor, future director Hal Ashby (Harold and Maude, 1971). All items show age and use, including dust, scuffing, and general wear. Southern often used this projector to screen these films; it is untested and offered as-is. The film reels appear to be in good, viewable condition, but have not been screened for verification. Reel 3 of the Dr. Strangelove set has a severed film leader but is otherwise intact. Stickers are deteriorated. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the Collection of Terry Southern.
