Description

Maxwell Kenton (a.k.a. Terry Southern & Mason Hoffenberg) Collection of (22) Candy (1958) Adult Novels, Alternate Editions, and Promotional Materials. Vintage original lot of (22) unauthorized, pirated editions of the novel Candy, co-written by Terry Southern and Mason Hoffenberg under the pseudonym "Maxwell Kenton," each with a different cover design, including some duplicates. Mostly issued by outlaw publishers in California, each book features the phrase "word-for-word from the banned French edition," a tactic used to skirt U.S. copyright law. Also included is (1) promotional book standee of the main character, Candy Christian, depicted in a bra and measuring approx. 15" x 20", produced by British publisher Bloomsbury for its 1997 campaign, (1) rare uncorrected proof of Candy and Southern's novel Flash and Filigree, (1) copy of The Candy Men (2022) by Nile Southern, chronicling the creation and legacy of this much-pirated, controversial classic, and (1) white cotton glove. Originally a short story about a girl in Greenwich Village, Candy evolved into a satirical picaresque-co-written with Hoffenberg and inspired by Voltaire's Candide-following the heroine's surreal, erotic misadventures. Banned in France and later adapted into a 1968 film, and even later, the pornographic film, The Erotic Adventures of Candy (1978), the novel became a national bestseller and cult classic, earning a spot on Playboy's "Sexiest Novels Ever Written" list in 2007. Books exhibit age and wear, with fading and yellowing to outer pages. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the Collection of Terry Southern.
