ONE OF THE BEST R&B CONCERT POSTERS IN HISTORY

James Brown 1962 Knoxville, TN Dazzling Jumbo Globe Concert Poster. A simply outrageous original cardboard window card advertising the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown, performing at Chilhowee Park in Knoxville, TN on Saturday evening, July 28, 1962. An extra tall jumbo poster with a tremendously appealing design that features JB right in the middle with his two big 1950's hits right there on his sports jacket. And "Night Train," right above the "J" in his name, was a hugely influential hit as well.

Brown was known for his elaborate & colorful large concert posters throughout the 60's, a great attention-getter to sell tickets and boost his profile, and this one may just be the best. Look at all the action, the movement, the pictures, the color scheme... this has more bells & whistles than a penny arcade. Count the five colors: green, black, red, white and up in the venue box, blue. And then throw in the "Beautiful Dancing Girls" and comedian Pigmeat Markham, and you had a pretty wild show, alright.

At this point James had charted 13 singles in Billboard's R&B chart; by the end of his career, he had charted 118. So this was still just the beginning for the Hardest Working Man In Show Business.

It's such a shame that almost all cardboard boxing-style concert posters in history have no graphic artist's credit, like psychedelic posters do. It's posters like this where that fact really hurts; that someone did beautiful labor-of-love designing for Globe and others, thinking their artwork would be thrown away after the show and forgotten. Masterpieces like this need a place in a museum, where future generations can marvel over how tickets were sold back when the world was completely analog. Measures 22" x 30 3/4" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Multiple pinholes in each corner, with only the "K" in "Park" being touched by them. In the upper left corner, one of them is a tiny tear-away pinhole. There is also a single pinhole at top center and bottom center, with only the "O" in "Company" touched by one. All four corners dinged and creased. There's a two-inch gouge on the green starting under the "M" in "James" and ending under his elbow, which goes through the poster and even allows a small amount of light through. There's a half-inch push-ding on the board's edge just to the right of "Orchestra." Blue-ink smears in the venue box are printer's flaws. Verso has the remnants of a white sticker that was torn off in the middle (the original owner had put his name & address on a sticker). There's a small amount of writing in black ink pen lower down from that. And there's about half-a-dozen instances of tape staining and a couple of ‘tape lifts' where tape had originally been used to post the poster.
