Description

John Coltrane 1962 Copenhagen, Denmark Concert Poster. An original large paper concert poster for jazz great John Coltrane appearing in Copenhagen, Denmark on Thursday night, November 22, 1962. Legendary jazz promoter Norman Granz presented the proceedings, calling it simply "A Modern Jazz Concert." In 1962, "modern jazz" was all the rage. Notice that "62" has been stamped in the lower right corner, which we're assuming was not part of the original printing or posting.

The musicians appearing in Coltrane's quartet are also listed on the poster, a nice plus: Elvin Jones on drums, McCoy Tyner on piano and Jimmy Garrison on bass. Those musicians also played on Trane's latest LP offering, Coltrane, which had been released in July on Impulse! Records.

Heritage has been able to run this poster only once before, and on that occasion a year ago, it realized $5,000. Measures 23 1/4" x 33 1/4" and grades to paper-backed Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Originally printed on very thin ‘wheatpaste' paper, this specimen has been preserved with a very light, appropriate backing paper. You can still see the print though the verso, as before, but the poster now feels stabilized and secure. A couple of quarter-inch edge tears at the very bottom, and a quarter-sized repair was made in the white right under "FA" of "Falkoner" in the lower left corner.
