Description
Jimi Hendrix Experience 1968 Concert Handbill from Stockholm, Sweden An original two-sided concert-advertising flyer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience in Stockholm, Sweden on Monday, January 8, 1968.You'd be hard-pressed to find a more striking-looking Jimi Hendrix concert handbill than this one. Topped off by the fabulous logo-lettering from his first album, Are You Experienced?, and followed by a huge photo of drummer Mitch Mitchell, Jimi and bassist Noel Redding, the flyer has stunning visual appeal which would sing in a black frame. But wait - there's the back, also. The three rock gods have been transformed into elves because, after all, it was Christmastime when this handbill was distributed to drum up ticket sales. (Notice that all three head shots on the back were culled from the one famous photo used on the front.)
And then rather than using plain type after that, the flyer's designers used a wonderful variety of catchy type fonts to disseminate the information. Really playing into the pop-culture ethos of the day. Remember, this was all designed and printed in 1967, because the concert itself occurred just eight days into 1968.
Translated, the front of the flyer says, "The Jimi Hendrix Experience Comes to the Konserthuset [Concert Hall]," one of Stockholm's oldest and most prestigious venues. "Monday the 8th of January, 1968. Tickets are sold from December 11, 1967."
We're going to let you Google the rest of the Swedish words, but Christmas is definitely mentioned. Then a pointing finger tells people to flip the flyer over. And on the verso, besides the three rocking elves, you're given the locations, dates and sometimes hours that tickets are on sale. It also explains that two shows are to be performed, at 7:00 and 9:30 PM.
The Stockholm stop concluded a brief, four-date Scandinavian tour by the Experience to start off the new year; they had already played Gothenburg, Sandviken and, in Denmark, Copenhagen.
Hendrix opened the show with a cover of the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." If you think that's unusual, the next three really were: the first three tracks on his new album, Axis: Bold As Love. That's right, he followed with "EXP" and "Up from the Skies," the only known instance among the Hendrix scholars that Jimi played those songs live in concert. They were followed by track three on Axis, "Spanish Castle Magic." Many other Jimi-standards were included in the set, such as "Foxy Lady" and "Fire." But another fun tidbit did surface: the very first known performance of "Little Wing" in concert (another track from Axis).
This very rare handbill, the first one Heritage has ever offered, measures 8 1/4 by 11 3/4" and grades to gorgeous Near Mint condition. The only imperfection that can be found on this near-perfect piece is a slight little surface crease in the white area (only) above the "i" in "Hendrix." Good luck spotting it. This would be a straight mint grading except that definition incudes "untouched." So yes, this has been touched, but barely, and nobody in the world would argue the condition.
