Description

Adam West "Batman" and Burt Ward "Robin" Hero Crimefighting Costume Ensembles from Batman (ABC TV, 1966-1968). In the pantheon of identifiable TV superheroes, none are as iconic as "Batman, The Caped Crusader" and "Robin, The Boy Wonder" played so memorably by Adam West and Burt Ward, respectively. The Batman ensemble consists of a burgundy-toned satin cowl with painted black pointed ears, a full-length royal-blue satin walking cape with a bat wing shape, a gray long-sleeve leotard with an applied black Bat emblem on an oval canary-yellow field on the chest, matching gray leggings, burgundy-toned satin shorts, a wide yellow utility belt with brass bat-shaped buckle, four attached yellow pockets, and one yellow dowel, and burgundy satin long gauntlet gloves. Many of the elements of this hero ensemble are marked "A" (for Adam West), and the utility is lightly marked in graphite on the reverse, "Adam West", both indicating the uniform was expressly used by series lead actor Adam West, then later in the motion picture Batman, The Movie (1966). A pair of navy-blue boots, and the internal shell that adds rigidity to the original cowl were finely reproduced. The Batman cowl is screen-matched to the Season 2 episodes with the villainous "Pa Parker", played by Shelly Winters, and likely worn in other episodes. Dark colors such as royal blue, the original color of Batman's cowl, degrade in color with prolonged exposure to dry cleaning fluid, thus the cowl, gloves, and briefs have faded to a light burgundy-purple color, but is not visually distracting. Miraculously, the cape retains its deep original blue color, the first to come to auction in such flawless condition. Together with "Robin's" ensemble consisting of a yellow satin fingertip-length cape, a cherry-red velvet vest with yellow shoelace closures and a yellow felt "R" emblem on a black circular field at the proper left chest, a green cotton tee-shirt, nude leggings, green knitted shorts, and green suede winged boots worn by actor Burt Ward as the Boy Wonder both on Batman and the motion picture Batman, The Movie. A black felt eye mask with almond-shaped eye holes, black leather belt with an interlocking brass metal buckle, and green kid leather gloves were finely reproduced under direct supervision by James Comisar. Without doubt, Batman & Robin crime-fighting uniforms from the "Classic 66" series are the most sought-after costumes from any era or genre of television!
