Description
Roman Holiday (Paramount, 1953), Audrey Hepburn "Princess Ann" Costume Sketch for an Alternate Daytime Outfit by Edith Head. Vintage original Roman Holiday (1953) sketch accomplished in gouache, graphite and ink on 14" x 17" artist's paper by legendary costume designer Edith Head. The illustration features a pale yellow sleeveless day dress with red floral accents, and red high heel shoes. Marked "Audrey Hepburn/ #12/ ext. alt." and signed by Edith Head in the lower left. Other notations include "demonstrate to check flare", "no red or vanilla buttons" and "stock linen", with other past notations erased during production. This is an alternate outfit designed for Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) as while on her daytime jaunt with reporter Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck). All of Hepburn's outfits were shipped to Rome where filming took place, including this alternate daytime outfit, since Head remained in Hollywood and extra wardrobe needed to be on-location in Rome. Hepburn ultimately opted to wear the simpler blouse and skirt ensemble in the film. Head won the Oscar for Best Costume Design (Black & White) for this charming film. Exhibiting age, production handling and light toning. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
