Description
Foo Dog Interactive Automaton by Artist Brian Poor (2013). This striking automaton reimagines the mythical Chinese Foo Dog (aka temple guardian lion) with exquisite craftsmanship and modern technology. Cast in resin with metal components and mounted on an ornately-trimmed wooden pedestal, the creature is expertly finished in a greenish-brown verdigris patina that evokes aged bronze. Beyond its sculptural beauty, this Foo Dog comes to life with internal mechanics and electronics. Motion sensors hidden within allow the creature to detect passersby - when someone approaches, the creature's head and eyes track their movement in tandem, giving the uncanny impression that the guardian is watching you. A brass dial on the front of the pedestal lets the user activate and adjust a microphone that picks up nearby voices and triggers the Foo Dog's mouth to open and close. All electronics are powered by a standard 110v outlet activated by a rocker switch mounted at the back of the pedestal which features a stamped brass plate reading, "FROM THE ELECTROACTIVE STUDIOS OF BRIAN POOR 2013". Brian Poor is a highly accomplished artist and animatronics designer with decades of experience in film, television and Disney themed attractions. Poor collaborated with director Guillermo del Toro on Pacific Rim (2013) and Mimic (1997). Stands 31" tall overall (including pedestal). Pedestal footprint is 12" x 12". Exhibits light handling. In fine operating condition. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
