Description
Winsor McCay - Gertie the Dinosaur (McCay, 1914), Gertie Animation Drawing Original Art. Gertie takes a well-deserved rest in this charming original animation drawing from Gertie the Dinosaur. Seen at the 11:17 mark of Winsor McCay's groundbreaking 1914 film, this hand-inked piece exemplifies his pioneering animation work. Known for Little Nemo in Slumberland, McCay revolutionized the medium with Gertie, introducing techniques like inbetweening, registration marks, and cycling drawings for smooth motion. The film, considered one of animation's most significant achievements, premiered over 110 years ago at Chicago's Palace Theater. Gertie is widely recognized as the first animated superstar, and McCay toured the film nationwide, interacting with her live onstage-culminating in his animated appearance at the film's end. Animation drawings, including McCay, are very rare and are highly prized by collectors. The board measures approximately 8.25" x 6.25", floated in a mat with an opening size of 9" x 7"; glass-front framed to 21" x 19.5". Light toning with minor handling and edge wear. Unexamined out of frame. Exhibited at LACMA, MIA, and AGO as part of the Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters exhibit (2016-2018). Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions."This was one of my earliest pride and joy pieces. I bought it from Mike Van Eaton many decades ago and I have enjoyed its company through my adventures in the animated medium." From the personal collection of Guillermo del Toro.
