Description
Sam Cooke, Five Royales 1958 Jumbo Cardboard Concert Poster. An original vintage window card advertising a concert headlined by the great Sam Cooke in Chattanooga, TN on Monday, September 29, 1958. The Five Royales were second-billed, on the heels of seven straight Top 10 R&B hits from 1953-57.Mr. Cooke is the star of the show, though, with four Top 10 R&B hits himself at this point, including the highly influential "You Send Me," which was a #1 pop hit the year before. Its follow-up, "I'll Come Running Back to You," went to #1 R&B. And you can't beat that $1.50 admission price!
A seldom-seen rarity from the dawn of Sam Cooke's brilliant career, which ended tragically all too soon, six years later. Measures 21 ½" x 28 ¼" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: R&B fans are probably aware that The "5" Royales, as their name appeared on their records, were subject to multiple spellings and misspellings throughout their career. Just witness two versions on this poster alone... "The Five Royals" (without an "e") in big print and "The Five Royales" under their photo.
Additional acts consisted of The Travelers, Clifford Wilson and His Band and Danny Carmichael and His Band.
Condition details: This poster, made by the Southern Poster Printing Co. of Atlanta, GA, is in fragile condition, with a weak margin all the way down the right side. The body of the poster is fine and certainly stands up by itself, but the board's edges are brittle and small pieces can easily break off if not handled with great care. Just a classic case of these things sometimes being made as cheaply as possible, knowing they had to last for just a few weeks before disintegrating. Now it's 60 years later. With admission being just a buck or two, imagine how small their advertising budget must have been.
A 1 ½" tear from the top edge through the "P" in "Person." A foot-long diagonal surface crease, or rut, that starts above Sam's picture and stops at the bottom of his second "O" – but visible only when tilted at an angle to the light. Four tears along the right edge, creating little flaps that would come off if someone picked up the poster there. Small amount of paper missing in lower right corner. Three-quarter inch tear on bottom edge below "SS" in "Admission." Three-inch crease on lower corner. The verso also has some dark toning, or staining, in two places.
