Description
Buck Rogers "Sonic Ray" Arsenal & Super-Scope Lot (Norton Engineering & Mfg. / Norton-Bell, 1950s). Blending Cold-War optimism with comic-strip spectacle, this trio of molded-plastic flashlights captures the moment ray guns leapt from Sunday pages into living-room darkness. The set includes two pocket "Sonic Ray" pistols-one jet-black, one scarlet-plus the scarcer large green variant whose rotating barrel lens once cycled kaleidoscopic color flashes. All three retain their lens caps, and the triggers move freely. Light edge rub and stray scuff marks reveal only gentle play, except the red pistol, which has a crack in the barrel, and the green gun shows era-typical ambering above the grip. The black pistol rests in its original illustrated two-piece box complete with fitted insert and "Confidential Cipher Booklet," letting junior astronauts flash Morse-code beams at star-base windows. Though the carton's corners are frayed and every panel bears creases, the vintage graphics still invoke that space-age nostalgia-proof of sturdy post-war paperboard engineering.Complementing the sidearms is the deluxe Buck Rogers Super-Scope, a shoulder-slung eyeglass that promised to spot cosmic invaders at 100 yards. Its ribbed black body and adjustable cloth strap remain intact with only light scuffing; the die-cut display box, however, shows the full toll of basement duty-torn lid flaps, heavy edge wear, deep creases, and scuffing. All pieces are offered untested but present clean battery chambers and intact wiring, inviting careful restoration or static display. Together these artifacts crystallize the dawn of space-age toy tech, when a flick of the trigger could banish Martian shadows and the glow of a flashlight doubled as interplanetary firepower-an eye-catching anchor lot for any Golden-Age sci-fi collection.
