Historic New York City 'Lifetime' Collection, Original Photographs (575+) by Skip Adelman, Morris Engel, Morris Gordon, Sy Seidman, Weegee, and Others, from Culver Pictures Inc. Vintage albumen prints, gelatin silver matte and glossy (many double-weight) press and editorial photographs, many unique, of various sizes and formats from 3.5" x 5", 4.5" x 7.25", 8" x 10" to 11" x 14" (some dry mounted to manila card stock or artist board), of nightscapes - Times Square is extensively documented, with architectural vistas, panoramas, landmark buildings lost to history, theater exteriors and premieres, city scenes, dockyards and quays, markets, restaurants and taverns (with interiors), including Delmonico's (est. 1837) ca. 1903 (first U.S. fine dining restaurant, first to serve women unaccompanied by men), notable personages, and beguiling street scenes, by Skip Adelman, Bernie Aumuller, D. Jay Culver, Morris Engel, Morris Gordon, Irving Haberman, Ray Platnick, Sy Seidman (Seidman Photo Service), G.W. Thorne (stereoscopic), Weegee [Arthur Felig] and others, with credit wet stamps, paper captions, newspaper clippings, and Culver Pictures Inc. stamps and paper labels on the verso.A significant portion of photos are Type 1, original from the camera negative, printed at the time. Some printed later. A small quantity of printed cards is counted. Notable buildings include the original Waldorf Astoria at 301 Park Avenue in 1928, demolished in 1929 to clear ground for the construction of the Empire State Building, the Park Avenue Hotel, between 32nd and 33rd, erected in 1878 and demolished in 1926, Hotel Astor, erected in 1905 and demolished in 1967, the 'Defeat of Slander' sculpture in Times Square, erected in September 1909 and demolished November 20, 1909, and the original Pennsylvania Station, as it was completed in 1910. Personages include Consul-General Charles De Gaulle and Mayor Fiorello La Guardia in 1939, and Mayor William O'Dwyer waving from a ferry. The hypnotic noir nightscapes of the Jules Dassin film The Naked City (1948), later reassembled for The Weegee Guide to New York: Roaming the City with its Greatest Tabloid Photographer, 2015, by Philomena Mariani and Christopher George, are recaptured here.
