Description

Excalibur (Orion, 1981), Original Key Advertising Art by Bob Peak. For the ambitious 1981 film Excalibur, Orion planned a campaign with five different illustrations used to capture the various themes of the film. Power, violence, destiny, and desire were all captured in individual standalone paintings, and brought together in the masterful montage that comprised the final one sheet poster art.

The artwork Bob Peak created for this campaign featuring the grand wizard Merlin won the Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators, where Peak was already a Hall of Fame Inductee for his many contributions to the field. But the artwork here, which shows the irresistible, dangerous power of passion as captured in the lovers' embrace of Lancelot and Guinevere may be the most daring.

With its symbolic neon colors, and suggestive highlights, it captures the adult sensibility of Excalibur in its expression of abandon. Created in mixed media gouache and pastel on board and signed B. Peak in the lower right, it's beautifully preserved and lush as the day it was created. The artwork measures 38.5" x 30.5" and is framed to 52" x 44". Not examined outside of frame.

Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the Treasures from the Bob Peak Collection.
