Description

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (TCF, 1975), 26 for 76 TCF Promotional Booklet Final Camera Art with Earliest Star Wars Logo (9.5" x 15.5"). Bill Whalen & Ralph McQuarrie Artwork. This is original camera art created in 1975 for a double-page spread in the 20th Century Fox promotional booklet 26 in 76 which was distributed at a marketing convention in January, 1976. The artwork consists of a hand-painted "pointy W" Star Wars logo by Bill Whalen on an acetate overlay over a print of Ralph McQuarrie's "TIE Fighter Attack" concept artwork adhered to illustration board. Interestingly, the title was accomplished in yellow to be reversed as blue in the printed booklet, which was common with reproduction techniques of this era. This was the first studio-issued promotion for the film and one of the very first official logos for the film. In fact, Whalen's logo here predates McQuarrie's logo seen on the Chaykin poster by several months. This hugely important genesis piece for the Star Wars marketing machine is originally from the collection of Bill Whalen, who retained it after its original usage. Exhibiting minor, orange-tinted marks near the neck region, likely from the adhesive used during its mounting to the board.
