Description
Johnny Cash, Dan Hicks 1968 Carousel Ballroom Concert Poster. An original first printing of this smaller-than-usual concert poster for Johnny Cash appearing at San Francisco's Carousel Ballroom on Wednesday night, April 24, 1968 - three months before Bill Graham rechristened it the Fillmore West. The Bay Area's Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks happily served as the opening act. Johnny was always hip, but we wonder how some of his conservative fans felt about the poster's information being contained in a cloud of smoke from a joint. (They probably thought it was just a roll-your-own.)But artist S. Elvin otherwise tried to create the poster's graphics with a western frontier sensibility, right down to the nailed piece of parchment to the wall. Nice mixture of browns, oranges and whites on this one.
The year 1968 was very big for the Man in Black; a couple of weeks after this show, Columbia released Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison and it crested at #13 on Billboard's Top LPs chart, a nice showing for a "country" album. But the single "Folsom Prison Blues" went all the way to #1 on the country chart, where it stayed for a month. And oh - he also married the love of his life, June Carter, on March 1.
Measures 8 3/4" x 14 5/8" and grades to Near Mint condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
