Description
Mae Clarke Condolence Card to Mrs. Boris Karloff. In Universal's original Frankenstein (1931), Mae Clarke played Elizabeth, who, on her wedding night, receives a visit in her boudoir from Boris Karloff's legendary Monster. The actress, always proud of that classic credit, sent this 3.5" x 6.5" Salesian Fathers Mass card to Mrs. Karloff after the actor's death February 2, 1969. The card has a color cover of Jesus Christ and the Catholic sacrament of Holy Communion; inside, the card notes that 25 Masses will be offered in Karloff's honor. Mae wrote "Dearly remembered Boris" in black ink at the top of the card, and signed it, "Mae Clarke - 'The Bride-to-be' in #1 Frankenstein." She also wrote on the blank inside page, "My dear Mrs. Karloff, I grieve with you. And I pray as deeply for your consolation...," signing "Mae." Also included is the original envelope, postmarked Feb. 4, 1969 in North Hollywood, hand-addressed by Mae, with her name and address printed by her on the envelope's reverse and complete with its 20-cent airmail stamp. Mrs. Karloff wrote "Mae Clark" [sic] in the return address area of envelope and placed a small check mark beside the name. Both card and envelope are in Excellent condition. An unusual and moving connection to two stars of the greatest horror film ever produced. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a Letter of Provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
